With its strategic location in the Mississippi River migration corridor, the Refuge is an important resting and feeding area for waterfowl and other birds.

McGilvray Road Bridges
The Van Loon Wildlife Area, just east of Trempealeau on Highway 35 is the location of the road, and five 19th century steel bowstring, arch truss bridges, which are now restored by the Wisconsin DNR.

Bicycling Paradise

Long Lake Canoe Trail
The canoe trail takes you through the Upper Mississippi River National Wildlife and Fish Refuge. Approximately 4 1/2 miles long and about a two hour trip for the average canoeist.
